Formed by guitarist/vocalist J. Michael, In Ruins was first introduced with the release of its "Haunted Moon" demo, recorded under the group's original name, Black Thorns. The band's sound fused elements of Black/Death/Doom Metal with a gothic touch to create a dark and eerie atmosphere, heavy yet melodic. The group received a notable amount of praise from the metal press and quickly drew the attention of
interested labels.
Eventually signing with Metal Blade Records, Michael assembled a full band lineup with the idea of playing select shows. While in the studio recording its debut, the band was renamed In Ruins. The debut disc was met with an extremely positive response from both fans and critics alike who appreciated the band's unique, dark sound. Gaining considerable exposure through various metal radio programs, the band routinely found itself topping playlists worldwide. Various North American live shows followed.
During an extended break, the band members all worked on other projects while writing new material for the next album. Signing with Finland's Rising Realm/JMT Music, In Ruins recorded "The Curse of Decay" in 2006, though due to JMT's demise the disc wasn't released until 2010. Due to various issues and commitments, the band was put on hold indefinitely.
In Ruins' upcoming 2023 album is the first new music from the band
to be released since.
